I love Sweeney Todd!!!!
not that that's news or particularly surprising. I mean seriously. how could someone who loves edward gorey and that one shirt with the ducks crossing the road not like Sweeney Todd? so this week I saw the actual stage production of Sweeney Todd. personally, I really enjoyed it. many people, I think, were put off by the fact that it was a different interpretation than the movie that just came out. they apparently compared it a lot to the movie, which just doesn't work since movies have a lot of advantages as far as budget, and the possibility of things happening all over the place and such. one thing about this production that I was at first hesitant about was the fact that the cast is just the named roles and they all play their own music. my fears about this were soon proven wrong when this instead added interesting bits to characterization. my least favorite part was Johanna. it wasn't that she was necessarily badly played, but she was badly interpreted as a silly, reckless girl. I also had some problems with the depth of character in Sweeney, but the less deep character was very good from where I was sitting. the lack of instruments was perhaps a tiny bit detracting, but not too much. Mrs Lovett was amazing, and I loved how creepily greasy Beadle was and so yeah. I pretty much loved it, tough it probably should have been in a smaller theatre than the Keller since it is like a barn. I got a nifty shirt, which really excites me.
